Yammer: A Different Type Of Social Networking Tool

Today I wanted to talk about the social networking tool, Yammer (insert eye roll here and groan "another one...").  But wait, this one is different, it is a PRIVATE network that I think could be very powerful for local real estate offices.

Yammer is basically like Twitter where people post information in real time, only who sees the posts are contained to select people.  For example, at Zillow we have a Yammer account set up where only Zillow employees can post and see what each other writes.  For me personally, it is great because I work remotely and it can be hard to keep up with what everyone is doing in the home office.

I thought this service would also be great for real estate offices, because typically the people in the office are always out doing their own thing (showing homes, giving listing presentations, attending CE, etc).  Since you aren't seeing each other face to face every day, using Yammer would be a great way to stay connected and update to date on any information that is beneficial to the office.

With Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare I am constantly checking in and updating information.  With Yammer I only go in when I have something beneficial to my peers to say - so the time commitment is very small.  Right now I only post about 2-3 times a week.  And at the end of the day, I get one email with all the Zillow Yammer updates for the day, rolled up into one email I can easily scan.

It is free to set up a Yammer account, and then of course there are upgraded plans if you want to expand the features available.  But so far the free plan has been sufficient for us.

Yammer is a great way to connect people who are going different directions, which is why I think it is perfect for real estate offices.  You'd easily be able to share information about upcoming meetings, new product launches, tips and tricks you learn in the field, etc. - all while keeping this information private from your competition.

Sara, Yammer is new to me and you did a great job of showing how it can/is being used in the real estate industry. Humor was the ideal way to start this post as you're right I was ready to ... "insert eye roll here and groan 'another one...'". Thanks!

Never heard of yammer - with so many out there - it is hard to know which one to focus on and your clients are using.

Jennifer - Well, I know that is what I thought too when we first set this up, but it slowly turning into a great tool as more people use it.

Jody - Your clients wouldn't be on Yammer.  This would be a site to privately stay in touch with your office/brand peers. You wouldn't get business from it, as it shouldn't be thought of as a marketing tool.  But rather would improve communication inter office.

Sara - Nice summary on Yammer. We are currently piloting Yammer to see how we could use it with Employees and potentially agents in the company. We will be looking into their community features that could be a nice fit for each office and keep their conversations separate from other offices within the company.

Thanks for the information, very informative.

For those who are interested in a twitter-like platform, such as Yammer, there are other tools on the market that offer additional functionality and security, and are appealing for the budget contious.  For instance, Presently is a microblogging tool that does not require the users to share the same domain (which I believe is required of Yammer), provides additional security for an organization, behind the firewall, and offers Freemium pricing (not per user/month like Yammer)

These types of tools are great for internal engagement of staff, but should also be considered when you're looking for ways to add value to your clients, partners, etc.  So, Jody, if you were interested in sharing preferred partners, (e.g., home repair companies, etc.) with your clients, you could facilitate those conversations, tips, business transactions, etc. via a private network that you control who is invited and has access.  And by using a tool such as Presently, you wouldn't be limited to individuals that share your email address.

It's certainly not a replacement for your public sites, like Twitter, Facebook...., but certainly a great option to consider when adding value and differentiating yourself with others vying for your customer's business.

Yammer is a great start to get the communication going, but when you are looking for more, take a look at MangoTalk from MangoSpring. Integrated IM takes your conversation into real time, everything is searchable without the need for #hashtags. MangoSpring also adds the ability to move your users and Data to a private server, integrate into your LDAP, bring it behind your firewall... oh and FREE ADMIN on all domains. No catch. Try that with Yammer. Sign up today for free at http://www.mangospring.com
