Real Estate Website Popularity Rankings for January 2009 - Hitwise

Hitwise just released their January 2009 ranking of the top real estate websites, according to market share.

In case you aren't familar with Hitwise, they track how approximately 10 million US Internet users interact with more than 1 million websites each month.  They then rank these sites within the appropriate industry based on usage, or what they consider to be market share.

To help put some hard numbers behind it, in January Zillow had more than 7.5 Million Unique Users visit the site (our best month ever!).

I highlighted the sites in green that as an Agent, you could actually utilize to market your business in some way.  The orange highlights represent brokerage websites (which all Agents still get some exposure on thru IDX).

Not surprising to see a number of foreclosure related sites on the list.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Zillow.  They are often misleading as to home values for our area at least.

Interesting stats, where did ActiveRain stand on the list??

Posted by Caren Wallace, Portland Caren Real Estate (Premier Property Group LLC) almost 11 years ago

Suzanne- May I recommend reading the post I did called How Accurate Are Zillow Zestimates.  It may help with understanding how we position the data to the public and real estate professionals.

Caren- Good question!  I have no idea what kind of traffic AR is getting?  Typically, websites start to get tracked around the 250K unique user mark, but would be interesting to know!

Sara, I would add green highlight to

  1. hud.gov  because it offers a wealth of information for consumer and real estate professional and links to the only reliable real time information about HUD homes.

    and
  2. RealtyTrac.com for the most comprehensive foreclosure and pre-foreclosure information on the Net.

I'm looking forward to our discussion on Good Morning Real Estate on Thursday evening!! Perhaps Justin Zimmerman should rename that site Good Evening Real Estate since his calls are scheduled in evening hours ;-)

Interesting stats.  I still don't see how accuracy can be achieved when less than 1/2 of real estate licensees are in any MLS.

Thought I'd add this comment.  On Sunday I hosted a Public Open House in my area, Dutchess County, NY.  We are about 2 hours north of NYC, just to give you all a point of reference.  I had 23 families attend the public open (which is phenomenal for this neck of the woods)and 6 of them came as a result of my posting the Public Open House information in Truilia.com!!!  I would be interested to see the breakdown of statistics on a state by state level.

Sara, thanks for taking the time to share this information with us.

Posted by Debbie Starnes, Realtor (Robertson Realty) almost 11 years ago

Tina- With regards to breaking down traffic numbers - I don't know about Trulia, maybe Frances can jump back in here and answer - but on Zillow we do have this.  Go to the listing detail page, click Home Info, scroll to the bottom of the page.  You'll see not only traffic for that listing, but we have also extrapolated it out to the zip, city, county and state numbers.  PS- You can add open house data on  your Zillow listings for free as well.

Hi Tina!

"I had 23 families attend the public open (which is phenomenal for this neck of the woods)and 6 of them came as a result of my posting the Public Open House information in Truilia.com!!! "

That is fantastic. Glad Trulia could help with your open house. By the way, I love your neck of the woods and Upstate NY :)

A recent study by Threewide tested the quality of consumer traffic and Trulia was the #1 generator of leads out of 16 of the largest real estate sites. Here is the link to read more about it.  http://sn.im/trulia-leads

Additionally, were really excited to see that consumer engagement on Trulia was at an all time high on Trulia in January. That's fantastic news for all the brokers and agents on Trulia.

Thanks for the Trulia info Rudy, it is definately valuable to me!  Next time you are in the Dutchess County area, I'd like to extend an invitation to you to visit our Houlihan Lawrence Millbrook office.  Would enjoy giving you a tour and chatting more about Trulia.  Thanks again.

I advertise on Realtor.com and have for over 6 months. I have received NO, None, Nada, not even a hint of response from a potential home seller or buyer. They may get lots of hits but at least in my area, Canton, Ga. it doesn't translate to ROI for your advertising dollar. Thanks for the info.

Zillow is the #1 perpetrator of incorrect information on the internet.  Is that in Hit Wise?

Posted by Lyn Sims, Schaumburg IL Real Estate (RE/MAX Suburban) almost 11 years ago

Thanks for this great information.

Posted by Patty Carroll almost 11 years ago

That may be your opinion Lyn, as you have expressed repeatedly on my blog and other places on AR, but what HitWise does show is popularity.  People vote on what they find valuable by choosing to visit it repeatedly and by telling their friends and family about the site.  The 7.5 million people that visited the site in January  represented a 30% MoM and 61% YoY growth for us. They are indeed coming back again and again and they are telling their friends about it.  This is evident by the fact that about 80% of our traffic comes from people directly typing Zillow into their browser or into a search engine.

Patty and Dale - With regard to Realtor.com, it would be interesting to know what percent of their traffic is actually Realtors themselves (perhaps checking out your own listings).  For the record, real estate agents represent about 10% of Zillow's traffic.  And I would guess Trulia's traffic is heavier on the consumer side as well.  The type of traffic these sites generate make a big difference in the results you can expect.

I haven't used Zillow but I will check it out soon. Realtor.com says they track hits by ip address and the majority of thier hits in Canton,GA, 30,000 per month, come from states other than Ga. As an advertiser I have no way to verify thier claims. They lock you into a 12 month contract. That should be your first clue. Just like cell phone companies forcing you in to 24 month contracts. If someone selling you something requires a long term contract "BUYER BEWARE".

Posted by Dale Falkowski, The Honest Agent Full Time Pro (Remax Town & Country) almost 11 years ago

This should be an even bigger eyeopener for agents and brokers when deciding if they should upgrade their website.

There are only 2 real estate companies in this list of 21.  YIKES.

Posted by Eileen Begley, Monterey Real Estate (Coldwell Banker, DelMonte) almost 11 years ago

Glad to see Remax.com up there so high. I closed 3 deals last year that came from there.

I know you work for Zillow, so I won't say anything to bad about it, but they have got to figure out how to get more accurate homes values. There is nothing worse then hearing a seller say, "but zillow said my home was worth....".   Has Zillow seen your home? I don't think so.

Realtor.com may indeed be a self promoting website. I've asked several clients if they have ever been to the site and they say, "no, never heard of it."

Logan, UT - That's why I am here.  Here is a good post to answer the "but Zillow says" phrase.  http://activerain.com/blogsview/848811/How-Accurate-Are-Zillows-Zestimates

VisualTour was #15 back in July. Are other sites getting more attention, or are they getting less? It seems more and more like photo slideshow tours are on the way out, and true video tours are on the way in.

Anna - We subscribe to a service that tracks popularity of website across all industries, called Hitwise.  However, Inman News usually published the monthly rankings, so I would check their site.
